Day 36: Irish Lake to Shelter Cove. 24+1 miles.

August 11.

Slept hard after the 40 yesterday. Woke up not far from Irish Lake which looked so pretty with the fog and steam coming off it. Most of the early miles were easy hiking through forest.

I took a little side trail to Bobby Lake. Another sobo named Troubadour was there. In true Troubadour fashion he had a guitar with him. I think I saw him ages ago passing by when I was going north to tag the terminus. He seemed not bad though was definitely practicing when I met him.

After days of racing across Oregon, I decided to take a long break and swim in the lake. It was awesome to jump in and get a little clean and “swim” around a bit. Those swimming lessons earlier this year finally paid off.

I ended up packing up not long after and took off. It was mostly forest walking for a long while until a hill before Shelter Cove. Got to look on the Cove and it looked pretty nice. Had to walk on little dirt side road to town then do a mile long road walk to town. A bunch of nobos were leaving. There were apparently a bunch of other hikers at Shelter Cove.

Finally made it to Shelter Cove. Pigeon was there but no sign of the kid. There was also a weird little multi colored band playing brass instruments. Pigeon called them something but I can’t remember. Calliope maybe?

Met a bunch of other sobos I hadn’t met before, Worm, Donkey, Mouse, and another guy. Legit, CheesyPuff and chance were there too. Whole sobo party.

I ended up camping with the new sobos and Troubador. We found a spot away from the campground near some railroad tracks and set up. The nearby area is national forest so it should be fine though I’m still a little sketched out.
