Hayduke Day 12: Hitching is Hard During a Pandemic

Monday, March 22

16 miles.

I waited too long to start to write this and now it’s 11pm in a cozy hotel in Hanksville so ima keep it short. Maybe.

Woke up to our tarps still in place despite the best attempts by the wind. The ford of the Dirty Devil wasn’t that bad. Water was cold and there was some quicksand hidden but it was low enough to not be much of a hassle. Didn’t bother with the waterproof socks I’ve been hauling this whole time so they are definitely getting mailed away.

Hiked the last dry 5 miles to a piped spring that was kinda gross but clear. The entire morning was spent in the Poison Spring Canyon dirt road, a small but interesting enough canyon. I listened to music most of the hike which, coupled with some piped spring coffee, made for a fun relaxed hiked.

yummy

We got through the 16 miles to the road before 2pm and were able to find and dig up our cache. I’d read that Hanksville was not the best spot for a resupply, especially a vegan one, so we opted to do another cache along the road.

We sat on the roadside railing for an hour before we finally got a hitch from a nice woman and her very cute dog. She was a local and told us a little about the area near us, including pointing out the Wasatch plateau. She also told us that  northern Utah had been getting a lot of storms which is why there had been so much wind the past few days.

She dropped us off at the gas station next to the hotel and we were able to get a room in a weird pre fab shed/really nice hotel cabin. Shower, laundry, food, the whole in town deal. This is a tiny tiny city but it’s got everything we need including shitty barely working cable. But most importantly, cell service. Was finally able to have a long talk with Kay which was very badly needed after 10 days of going without.

This town refresher was very badly needed. Not only to clean our clothes/selves but just to reconnect with the outside world, if only for a few hours.
