Tahoe Rim Trail Day 1: Tahoe City to Brockway Summit – 21 miles. Started at noon, made it past Watson Lake, passed a sketchy highway crossing, ate cold mush with nooch, hiked up a big hill and watch a pretty sunset. Good day overall. Should have brought some hot sauce though.
Day 2: Brockway Summit to idk some Vista past Ophir creek – like 12 miles. Planned on doing 34 miles today and the snow laughed in my face. Barely made it 11 miles before I had to glissade my way down a mountain and gtfo of the snow. Still ended up still having to climb a mile in waist deep snow to end the day. Without a doubt one of the sketchiest days of my life. Completely underestimated the conditions on the north and east sides. It’s supposed to be worse going further. Sad so say but I am bailing on the east side of the TRT. Gonna make my way to South Lake Tahoe and take some extra time doing the snow free sections because I can only take postholing so goddamn much.
Day 3: Ophir Creek to Star Lake – 9 actual trail miles + 6 mile road walk + 3.4 on a connector trail -50 trail miles. Started the day backtracking down a giant snowfield I climbed up the night before. Followed that by a long road walk to Incline Village where I got an expensive af ride down South Lake Tahoe. Picked up some stuff, hung out at a library and read comics, then climbed back up to the trail. This thing is way nicer when it is not covered in snow.
Day 4: Star Lake to Luther Pass campground – 15 miles. Thought I’d skipped most of the snowy sections. Nope. Took me 4 hours to go 5 miles across more sketchy snow fields and ridges. Worst of all, I lost my hat on one of the millions postholes. Treated myself to a little campfire while I ate more cold mush and cookies to try to salvage the day.
Day 5: Echo Summit to Lake Aloha – 8 miles. A friend’s instagram pics of Lake Ahola looked nice so I decided to come see it for myself. It’s aight. After days of struggling in snow I decided to take it easy and chill at the lake for a bit before calling it quits on the trail. I only managed to do about half the trail this time but I’ll definitely be back. Probably when there’s less snow. Definitely when there’s less snow.
